I need some preferably low-cost ideas to get the word out in nearby residential (or business?) areas. I am considering going door to door w/ flyers, or doing a postcard mail out, but I don’t know how effective these will be and I’d like some more creative ideas to throw into the mix. Can you help? Are there any important factors I should be aware of?

For the first time, I’m attempting to design a postcard and mail it to my friend. I’d like to be able to draw on the card with gel pens, rather than to just print out a design (I only use my printer to print out text, not colored images). Which type of paper works better if you’d like to draw on it without getting smudges everywhere – matte or glossy paper? Is there a certain brand of blank cardstock/paper that anyone would recommend for the type of postcard I’d like to work with? I’ve been checking out the Amazon products, and Avery seems popular, but I’m not experienced at all with creating postcards.
